Real Lives: remembering William Laker RN 1911-42

Stoker 1st Class William Laker RN (C/KX.130176), aka my Great Uncle Bill, was born in 1911 in Penge, South East London to parents John, a carman/cartage contractor, and Louise (nee Bradford). William and his siblings, born between 1891 and 1916 were sufficient in number to form a football team, although Mary Ann had sadly died as an infant.

William married Rhoda Luff on Christmas day 1937 at the impressive and extant Wesley Hall Methodist Church on Sydenham Road, London SE20.

William was lost at sea in the 1942 HMS Curacoa incident, which I have previously written about, and is remembered on Part 4 of the Chatham Naval Memorial. RIP.
