Farewell Whitechapel Bell Foundry

Yesterday, the Gentle Author communicated the sad news that The Whitechapel Bell Foundry in the Spring of next year. Current owner Alan Hughes told the GA that he intends to sell the business including its Grade 2 listed building when he retires in May because he considers a small foundry to no longer be economically viable. Today, BBC News and others picked up the story and further reported that the building has already been sold.

A statement on the Foundry’s website confirms the sad news. Founded in 1570, and on its current site for some 250 years, the Whitechapel Bell Foundry is Britain’s oldest manufacturing business having made Big Ben (completed in 1858) as well as the many inscribed hand bells presented to retiring officers of the Metropolitan Police in East London. In a comment on the Gentle Author's blog, Alan’s wife Kathryn confirms that he is to retire and they have received an offer for the building. Kathryn also confirms that they are trying hard to find a buyer for the business following Alan's retirement.

I wish Alan Hughes the very best for his retirement and hope for the best outcome for the Foundry's employees, as well as for the future life of this very fine historic building.
